Chapter Twelve

Missy

I’m still sitting on my bed when I hear the sound of a helicopter outside of my window. I don’t think anything of it at first, but it starts to get closer and louder. I wonder if the cops are going to bust someone in this building. There’s a lot of crime in my neighborhood, so it’s totally possible. But then the engine cuts out, and there’s only silence once again.

I look at the clock on my microwave. It’s nearly noon. Stone should be here any moment. I feel kind of nervous but mostly in a good way, butterflies fluttering around in my guts. I’m thinking about how much fun it was to ride in his fast car, but mostly I’m thinking about Stone’s intense blue eyes and that incredible smile.

My phone buzzes. It’s a text from the building manager. “Please go to the roof.”

Well, that’s extremely weird. There’s nothing on the roof except for blank concrete and a view of some shoddy buildings. Kids from the building sometimes go up there to smoke on the sly, but otherwise there’s nothing going on up there. I don’t know why my building manager would order me to the roof.

But who knows? Maybe Rodney wants to berate me for my late check last month, and he wants to do it on the roof.

“Ok,” I text back, steeling myself for more weirdness, worried that I won’t be there when Stone arrives because of this. I ride the rickety elevator all the way to the top, swallowing hard whenever the steel box shudders.

But once I’m up there, all the air whooshes from my lungs because a black helicopter is waiting, parked on the roof. I stare at it in shock, and my shock deepens when Stone Phillips steps out of the passenger side door, dashing in a navy blue suit and a cream colored shirt.

“Missy,” he calls. “I’m sorry I didn’t get your number the other night. I’ve gone to a lot of trouble to find you again.” His blue eyes reflect the midday light, cerulean during the day.

I’m still too stunned to speak. I’ve never seen a helicopter up close before. My eyes wander the body of the machine. It reminds me of some giant prehistoric insect, encased in metal.

My mouth gapes open, and I shut it suddenly.

“What’s going on Stone?” I whisper, my eyes darting from him to the bird, and then back again. “What is all this?”

His smile makes wrinkles form in the corners of his eyes. “Will you join me for a helicopter tour of New York?” he asks me, his voice booming above the sound of the wind whipping across the roof.

I shake my head.

“Really?”

His eyes are kind

“Really, really,” he replies. “Come on sweetheart. Let’s go,” he says, holding a hand out. As if in a dream, I take his hand and clamber into the helicopter none too gracefully. He hands me a helmet and puts one on himself.

I silently strap myself in, still feeling stunned. I’ve never been in a helicopter before.
